Here are some helpful travel safety tips that can keep you from becoming a victim of crime while visiting other countries.
Always be aware of your surroundings.
Avoid wandering around after dark.
There is safety in numbers, always recruit a buddy to accompany you.
Blend in. Avoid anything that draws attention to you.
Separate your money. Do not carry all of your money/credit cards in the same place. Keep some cash in your money belt, some in the safe at your hotel etc.
Don’t keep your wallet in your jeans pocket. Professional pick pockets are VERY good at what they do. Buy a money belt that lies underneath your clothing.
Leave copies of the picture page of your passport at home with family, give a copy to your guide and also scan and email a copy to yourself.
Get travel insurance. Your domestic insurance may cover abroad health care so check and be familiar with their policies. If your insurance does not cover overseas health care, there are many agencies that offer affordable, short term, insurance for your vacation.
Get any appropriate vaccinations and be aware of any health concerns in your destination.
If you find yourself in a theft or robbery situation, give your wallet/belongings up. Throw them a safe distance away from you and run. If you followed the separation of money step above, you will be fine and no amount of money is worth your safety.
Don’t wear your camera around your neck unless you tuck it under your clothes. Take it out, take a picture, and put it away. This goes the same for phones.
Don’t pet stray dogs and cats. They carry harmful diseases and parasites.
